In the vibrant tapestry of spiritual growth, the adage "strength in numbers" resonates not only in the realm of sports but also in the journey of the soul. From February 2-3, one-third of Bishop Reicher’s student body will unite with thousands of other high school students from parishes and Catholic schools across central Texas for the annual Austin Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference (DCYC) in Waco. This two-day event promises a tapestry of community, camaraderie, internationally acclaimed speakers, live music, and opportunities for adoration and confession—a profound opportunity for Catholic teens to revel in the joy of faith together.
Encouraged by Ablaze Ministries missionaries Celina Pinedo and Javier De Alva Garza, fifteen Bishop Reicher students partook in the 2023 event, a number that has now swelled in 2024. De Alva Garza eagerly anticipates bringing a fresh group to encounter the Lord, expressing, “It’s so good for the heart to see other people your own age all together praying and praising God together at the same time, gathering 2000 teens in one place that are actually willing, opening their hearts a little bit, if not a lot, to the Lord.”
The convergence of fellowship, fun, and faith exerts a magnetic pull on the attending students. Freshman Jocelyn Ramirez anticipates her inaugural DCYC, eager to forge new friendships, engage in enjoyable activities, and deepen her understanding of God. Junior Weston Michalewicz views the event as an opportunity to strengthen bonds with peers, remarking, “I’m excited about getting to spend quality time with some friends, and also some I’m not as close with, to really grow in faith and unity.” Sophomore Mackennon Sammon envisions learning more about his faith, applying scripture to daily life, and enjoying the company of friends.
While navigating the challenges of faith in contemporary society, the students of Bishop Louis Reicher find support amid the pressures to conform. Mackennon reflects on the supportive environment at Bishop Louis Reicher, stating, "there’s a lot of support, and that helps a bunch."
Sister Maria Benedicta of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, a three-time adult volunteer at DCYC, attests to the transformative impact on the youth, describing the experience as empowering and uplifting. She underscores the significance of events like DCYC, where young people can witness the collective dedication to living the Catholic faith.
For the students of Bishop Louis Reicher, the presence of campus ministry, led by Celina Pinedo, has not only opened doors to youth events like DCYC but also nurtured a living of faith. Pinedo emphasizes the importance of walking alongside students, fostering encounters with the Lord beyond the classroom. Sister Maria Benedicta notes the increased willingness of students to discuss their faith, attributing it to greater involvement in youth ministry.
Junior Will Hays, a Catholic convert, expresses gratitude for the impactful role of Catholic Campus Ministry, particularly through the work of Ablaze Ministries. He acknowledges the pivotal influence of Javi and Celina in his spiritual journey and anticipates the broader connections with like-minded individuals at DCYC.
With a growing number of Bishop Louis Reicher students converging at DCYC, we pray that God continues to bless them with spiritual fruit, which they will bear for the renewal of the Catholic faith at our school, in the city of Waco, and beyond—wherever the Good Shepherd calls them.
