Bishop Reicher Student Council is honored to be hosting its annual Big Smoothie Event in memory of student Rod McBride. Rod McBride was diagnosed with Leukemia during his junior year at Reicher (1997-98). He spent most of that year receiving treatment. He returned to school for his senior year but was admitted into the hospital in October. On October 21, he lost his hard-fought battle and was called home to our Lord.
While a student at Reicher, Rod played football and was involved in the band. Rod always had a smile on his face. He cared about his classmates and friends and was known for his kindness. During his fight with Leukemia, he maintained that smile and a positive, caring attitude.
His death affected not only his classmates but the entire student body because he was so well-known and loved for his kindness. He will always be remembered by the class of 1999.
The Friday after his funeral, Coach Waggoner wanted to cancel the football game. However, Rod's parents insisted that the game be played in his memory as he would have wanted it. The Class of 1999 hosted a dance in his memory to help raise money for his medical and funeral expenses. Now 22 years later, the dance is still carried on with 100% of the proceeds going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help others. What was thought would be a one-time dance has become a Reicher tradition to carry on his legacy of kindness.
