Middle School Service Hour Program

The Middle School Service Hour Program at Bishop Louis Reicher Catholic School encourages students to lovingly help and serve needy persons in their parish/church and community.  Matthew’s Gospel (25:31-46) is a prime scriptural basis for this service program. Our goal is to enable our students to live the gospel message as Jesus did, to love and serve God and our neighbor.

Through concrete charity to others, students will experience conversion and be transformed in a way in which they come to know Jesus better and develop a deeper relationship with Him and other members of their community. To accomplish this, students are asked to serve those persons whose needs may be either material, physical, spiritual, mental, or emotional. BLRCS partners with parishes and churches and neighborhood community institutions, charitable organizations, and other social outreach agencies where students can volunteer their service and generously give of themselves.

We take our cue on the necessity of serving others from Christ himself. As a means of teaching students that service is integral to the Christian life, middle students are required to complete ten (10) service hours per year as an extension of the school’s religion curriculum. 

Students must complete their ten (10) service hours by the end of the school year. In addition, the students must submit a service hour report form signed by the site supervisor or service coordinator at the organization in which the student chose to serve.  Students are not permitted to count service to relatives, work for which they were compensated, or service to a for-profit organization. Likewise, participation in school and class fundraisers does not count toward meeting the service hour requirement.
